"A dance of darkness and dawn. This Kishu lacquer tray is crafted through the ancient ‘nuri-mono’ process: 20+ layers of vermillion and black urushi, hand-polished to reveal glimpses of the underlying hue—like sunlight piercing through night. Each stroke follows the wood’s natural grain, where knots and textures become part of the story, not flaws to hide.
Cultural Essence: The interplay of red (hope) and black (void) reflects the Japanese philosophy of ‘yūgen’—finding beauty in depth and mystery. When used as a tea tray, the red lacquer mirrors the glow of hot water; as a dining plate, the black background makes food colors pop.
Edo Kiriko is a designated national traditional craft in Japan. Artisans meticulously cut and process molten crystal glass at 1350 degrees Celsius with expert skill. The resulting double structure, composed of both clear and colored glass, creates a magical play of light and shadow along the cut lines.
